Music Curriculum
Students at Nativity have classroom music in now Preschool through 4th. Students in 5th grade participate in band or choir. Students in grades 6th-8th choose from band, choir, or handbells for a music class. Students study elements of music going from sound to symbol through the Songworks approach.
"SongWorks is an engaging way of teaching music that invites deeper thinking about the art of interacting with children and helping them thrive as learners. How we converse with children is important, and we work on ways of teaching that honor their choices, value their ideas and conversational contributions, and prompt their imaginations. It's a way of teaching that really nurtures children and keeps their spirit of musicality alive."-Danielle Solan, Fellow SongWorks Teacher Students study folk songs from many different backgrounds, play games, and study elements of music by mapping, dotting, reading picture scores, playing on hand staff, then leading to standard notation. We also study different Masterworks through movement, and do folk dancing. Our music classroom has many Orff instruments as well. K-5 students and 6-8 students perform in a Christmas Concert in December and the 6-8 ensembles perform in a concert in the spring. Choir, band, and bell students also sing and play at School Masses. |
